If you don't batch process, I'd say get a good 64-bit OS, and the cheap quad-core and call it good. On the Pentium D, the computer was "froze" in encode mode for hours while it crunched the numbers. Took hours off of my encoding times from my old Pentium D, and I can still surf the web, adjust photos, etc, while encoding. AVHCD is what I purchased the i7 for, and here it is worth its weight in gold. Now, encoding AVCHD files? That's another story. If you were batch processing 14-bit D3x NEFs, you'd probably see an improvement, anyone want to lend me their D3x for a test? :). I have 6GB of RAM (6x 1GB chips in tri-channel mode), and the virtual PC has 3GB addressed to it. So I do PS work (CS3) on the 圆4 win 7, and I do the NEF conversions in NX2 monitor #2 which is actually a virtual machine. Just for kicks and stability, I even a 32-bit copy of Windows 7 in virtual PC mode with NX2 running in virtual PC mode, tied to a network drive on my main machine. BTW, NX2 is still slow, by design, but results are good. I quickly clicked a system together (didn't look into all the components, so don't order this) and I end up with €841 including VAT while the comparable Mac 2.8 Xenon system is €2300! Maybe I'm missing something?

They sent me the full version of cs5! Now granted, they screwed up the shipment twice, customer support sucked, and I hate Adobem, but in the end I got more than a fair deal.

I actually owned the full cs2 and upgrade cs 5 on windows. I had to contact adobe, but they shipped me a new version of cs5 and deactivated my old windows software. If you buy through apple, you will pay too much.Īlso, all the programs you mentioned will run on a Mac. Just buy your own hard drives and ram elsewhere. I also dual boot into windows 7 for some applications that work requires.

You cannot buy or build your own workstation for the same price.Īlso, you don't have to mess with over clocking, driver updates from various hardware vendors, etc. They build a solid machine, easy to add memory and hard drives, and it is well supported. I consider building my own xeon workstation prior to getting a Mac pro, but as everyone knows, apple is a hardware company. Hardware wise, the xeon ISA a better processor.

You simply can't have a "too fast" computer when dealing with high def video. And even though CS5 makes good use of multiple threads, transcoding large high def video files takes a long time. However the combined improvement from CPU instructions per clock, increased clock rate, faster memory/disk, and faster GPU makes the system much more responsive.ĭespite the improvement NX2 is still slower than I'd like. If you upgrade keeping a similar clock rate, it's less noticeable. You can't just plug in a new chip, as the socket is different. I use the "hack" to enable GPU acceleration for Premiere Pro and Photoshop. I have CS5, which makes good use of the multi-core CPU.
